Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Shin, CEO of Revival Jewelry, located in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Revival designs make and sell the Modern Locket. It's for anyone that cherishes the memory of important people and moments in their life. Our desire is to be a company that cares about people and not just profits. We want to touch people's lives in a positive way through the products we sell, the way we conduct business, and by actually caring about our customers.
Tell us about yourself
The original jewelry piece we designed was originally for my mom, who doesn't like traditional lockets but does wear jewelry for fashion. We set out to make lockets that people won't just store away but would want to wear, but it needs to be affordable if the jewelry is going to be trendy. That's why we created Revival Jewelry. What keeps us going and growing each day is hearing stories of our customers' lives and how we've touched them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I was surprised that we were able to hit 1 Million in sales within the first two years of business. Really, the number of people's lives we've been able to touch is what I consider our greatest accomplishment so far. Today we have nearly 20,000 unique customers.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The fact that you are responsible for others. We care for our customers, but when it comes to your employees, you sort of hold their livelihoods at stake and even have an impact on their well-being.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- It helps to have a co-founder. Don't do it alone.
- Figure out how to monetize your business first and start doing it. When you have no cashflows or are cash-strapped, it's difficult to think long-term.
- Good execution is way more important than just good ideas.
