Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katherine Duffin, founder of Revamped, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm in the business of improving clothing that already exists to help reduce textile waste. This includes completely reconstructing garments and improving, repairing, or altering them. E.g., An old sweatshirt turned into jogging pants or making a teddy bear out of a loved one's old clothes.
Tell us about yourself
I started Revamping clothes as a teenager when I was learning how to sew. I saw other shapes and potential in the clothes I was taking apart and figured out how to make new garments out of tired ones. After years of honing my craft and selling more and more, I feel a tremendous amount of joy seeing people wearing my clothing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment so far is never giving up! Persistence has led me to open up a storefront location where I can connect with the neighbourhood and my customers.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a small business owner is realizing your strengths and weaknesses and delegating where necessary.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your research.
- Ensure you have money for incidentals ( everything costs more than you think)
- Do not expect to be profitable immediately.
