Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Suanne Sikkema, founder of Restore Wellness LLC., located in Anchorage, AK, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Nutritionist and Health Coach who helps people transform their relationship with food and improve their digestive wellness. In my work with people from the age of 15-60, we often explore mindful and intuitive eating practices which can boost awareness about why we do what we do in relation to food. My business is Restore Wellness, and I work remotely and see people via telehealth in most states in the US.
Tell us about yourself
I have been in practice for over eight years after getting my MS in Nutrition and Integrative Health. Before starting Restore Wellness, I had a professional gardening business for many years. It was an easy transition from gardening to nutrition. I like to think I moved from dealing with the microbiome of the soil to the microbiome of the body. I also have a background in herbalism and the healing power of plants.
I am passionate about working with people who are motivated to make a change in their relationship with food. As a health coach, I love to ask people questions to get them thinking about why they make their choices around food (and other aspects of their lives too).
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am thrilled by the ability to set my own schedule. This allows me to have my business fit the natural rhythm of my life, not the other way around. This is the difference between me doing my life's work instead of doing a job.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I am deeply challenged by understanding how to market in an effective way that resonates with me. I also feel isolated in a solo practice sometimes.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be passionate about what you do, as that will really help you keep moving forward when you have challenges.
- Be as intentional as you can about who you want to work with and what services you provide. This message will help draw the right type of business, ultimately making your job easier.
- Take an inventory of what you want in your business and farm out the rest. Remember that your time is valuable. There are lots of professionals out there with skills to help support your business.
