Tell us about yourself
I was a young athlete in Upper Michigan, middle of nowhere, USA. What first got me started on this path was due to my own injuries and the shortcomings of services in our little town. By the time I was 19, I had four surgeries and another 3 to come not long after. This was in part due to the lack of education on strength training and rehabbing from my injuries in high school. I somehow made it to college, playing D1 football at Central Michigan University before succumbing to injuries and another surgery.
This motivated me then and still motivates me today to be the best physical therapist I can be. When I started my clinic in 2015, it was largely because I felt I needed to in order to provide the care and education to young athletes in the community. Although there were many good clinics in the area, I felt I could create a great clinic, and I believe I have. My motivation continues to be the leading facility in the area, not just for business success but to bridge the gap of care that still very much exists today in the rehabilitation space. The kind of care we provide really is a lifestyle and is not just for when you are injured. We have many services that prevent injury and can save many people the hassle of downtime and expenses that come from an injuries.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is coming to work every day and seeing how many people we truly help. Again, not just from the injury itself but also the amount of education we give to the community on living a healthy, active lifestyle. I also very much enjoy the growth I see in all of our employees. We are an educational facility that has a few different internship programs from which we often hire from. Seeing a young college student turn into an amazing, inspired employee that eventually goes off to graduate school and becomes a doctor truly is inspiring.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balancing my personal time. The business is me, and I am the business. I think that happens with anything you are passionate about and care about. Being able to be grateful for the wins and not negatively being affected by the trials and tribulations is most definitely a challenge. Starting each day with a perspective of gratitude and constantly reminding myself of how many people we help every day helps me manage the tough times.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You must have a deep passion for what you will be doing. If you don't, the challenging times will most definitely wear you down. You must truly believe that what you are doing makes a positive difference for many people, at least in our industry. Being prepared. You must create lofty goals and create a plan to reach those lofty goals. Yes, most of the time, nothing goes as planned, but I believe by setting those lofty goals, you can manifest them one way or another. Even if it did not go as planned. Lastly, you must do personal "work." Being selfish in the sense of always looking internal and doing your best to be the best version of yourself. Admitting to your shortcomings. Being vulnerable to being open and listening to constructive criticism. Not only do you need to know what you're good at, but more importantly, you need to know what you're not good at. Always strive to get better at all aspects, but in business, you need to know what your wheelhouse is, and you must be humble enough to ask for help. You can't build anything successful long-term without a solid team around you.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Starting a business changes you, in my opinion, for the better. All of your shortcomings come to light. All of the challenges you struggle with as an individual come to the surface. This is not easy, but when you set your mind to becoming a better, more well-rounded person, you can dramatically change for the best, and the business will work as well.
