Wardrobe That Grows With Your Little One - Rent a Romper

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Gregor, Founder of Rent a Romper, located in Redondo Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Rent a Romper offers a clothing membership for parents of babies and toddlers because they (out)grow so fast. We know that we are producing way too many clothes, and we know that kids only wear clothes for a short time, leaving parents with the constant task of keeping up with them. Our capsule memberships provide parents with just the clothing they need as their child grows, curated for their needs and delivered to their home. We offer clothing from preemie to 5T for families all across the U.S.

Tell us about yourself

I started Rent a Romper because I saw this problem firsthand with two growing boys. I was looking for ways to help make shopping more convenient while also looking for options that would not generate more waste. When I couldn't find any solutions, I decided to build them myself. As the company grows and we see the impact we have as a community of parents, I am even more motivated to serve more families and extend the life of clothing. As a mom, it is important for me to show my boys that I am working to build a better future and planet for them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My favorite part of this business is hearing from our customers. I love when we are able to pick an outfit for them that is perfect for a special occasion or family photo shoot or turns out to be their little one's favorite. The stories of how we make their lives easier during a time of parenting where we are all often overwhelmed keep us going every day. In our business, we get to see their children grow as they swap their clothing in and out over time, and that is a really special feeling.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Building a business is hard work, and it never really turns off when you are the owner - there are always tasks to be done and things that need attention. Making sure the business continues to grow while also creating personal boundaries and dedicated time for family can be a challenge. It is easier said than done, but trying to time block activities, including important tasks, family time, and rest, has helped me to ease this stress.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your why. Not just why you are starting the specific business or problem you are solving, but your personal why. This anchor will come in handy on the difficult days when you need to recenter yourself.
  2. Build your network. Starting a business can be lonely, and you will be responsible for many moving pieces. Surround yourself with experts, advisors, and friends you can call on to help you when you are stuck.
  3. Try and learn. Don't be scared to try something or launch your product. Every time you make a change or new step in the business, it might be wildly successful, and it might not. Each time make sure you learn and iterate.
