Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Renee Koepke, a Licensed Massage Therapist based in McAllen, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a primarily-traveling licensed massage therapist serving Texas Rio Grande Valley. My customers include local residents, traveling nurses, and other professionals, along with a handful of contracted clients through the Community Living Assistance and Support Services (CLASS) program.

Tell us about yourself

After graduating from the College of Health Care Professions in 2019, I trained at a local massage studio until it unexpectedly closed for business. Days after, I decided to take the plunge and operate solo. After establishing my private office, I acquired a contract with a local agency to provide specialized therapy to clients with special needs. Each day I'm motivated by these clients with disabilities ranging from Cerebral Palsy to Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Down Syndrome to provide the best quality of care imaginable.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching a new business with nothing other than my equipment and an empty room, furnishing it into a private office, acquiring the contract with the State of Texas, and generating enough income to be able to buy myself my choice of a used vehicle on a whim after a year's time.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a sole proprietor, doing most of the leg work myself, although I have outsourced some of it. Also, having enough time in the day to focus on priorities or what needs to be done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

In order to start a business, you first need to take the plunge and bring your business plan to life. To run a business, try to improve upon each day, getting better and better. In order to grow, prioritize landing your ideal clients and outsource work when it can save you time.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

In my free time, I formulate customized infusion products, such as lotion bars and coconut milk bath soak, in the Infusion Lab located inside my private office. I also like to throw Spa Parties, where I teach a lovely DIY Gua Sha facial massage ritual (also available over Zoom). Currently, I'm developing a mindfulness meditation program focused on breathwork.
