Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Snailum, Owner of Remedy Pilates, LLC., located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Remedy Pilates & Barre- At Remedy, I am fortunate enough to have many clients. I train youth to professional athletes, people looking for a transformation, and those recovering from various injuries. I specialize in injury recovery and specific sports conditioning.

Tell us about yourself

I started teaching pilates in 2005 after over seven years in advertising. I was introduced to the movement by a friend getting certified in LA who treated me to some sessions as a wedding gift. I fell in love immediately, and about a year after getting married, I decided to undergo the certification myself.

Initially, I did not plan to teach pilates full-time. It was going to be more of a way to stay in shape and have access to pilates, but shortly after I signed up, I found out I was pregnant with my son, and my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. My entire perspective changed, and my career in advertising didn't fit into my new outlook. I honestly had no idea how much I would love teaching and working with people on this level.

In 2008 I opened Remedy in Scottsdale and became master teacher trainer in 2010. In 2018 I opened my second location in Arcadia. I was motivated every day by the progress I saw in my clients, both mentally and physically. I am also inspired by the fantastic teachers. I am lucky enough to work with each day - we support each other, teach each other and grow together.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner (so far) is staying true to my original mission statement. When I opened the doors in 2008, I wanted to create an environment that was supportive for teachers and clients. I always look at situations through the eyes of the teacher to make remedy feel like a place they can grow their business too.

When it comes to clients, I want them to feel like they got a giant hug when they come to remedy - a challenging, sweaty hug - but a hug nonetheless. I'm also proud of both locations and making it through a recession and Covid.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time management is one of the hardest things to be a business owner. I love teaching, so I often struggle with when to find time to do the actual business. Work/Life balance can be challenging, but it is worth it to be able to run a business the way you want to run it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do the work upfront. Write a solid business plan, create clear expectations for partners if you go that route, and use these tools to keep yourself accountable.
  2. Aim high. Just because something doesn't seem realistic doesn't mean it can't happen. If you're shooting for the stars, you're bound to land along the way, and you might limit yourself if you don't go for it.
  3. Never forget what it was like to work for someone. Business owners harbor stress employees don't, but we signed up for that. When owners stop relating to their employees, they lose all compassion or understanding for the job they are doing for you. As an employee, you often feel like the owner just takes and takes without understanding what they have to deal with behind the scenes. As an owner, it's easy to function off the stress of paying bills or, even worse, being paranoid that every employee is out to get you. Be a good owner. You will have good employees.
