Become Confident Speakers - Remarkable Speaking

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Bossert, Co-Owner of Remarkable Speaking, located in Coldstream, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Public speaking coaching for software engineers and professionals.

Tell us about yourself

As the pandemic started, I discovered a very different way to learn and practice public speaking and give presentations. As someone who had always been utterly consumed by stage fright and avoided public speaking for most of my adult life, it was revelatory! As I moved from terrified to a more and more confident public speaker in a short time, it was natural to share with others, and I began to coach. I was surprised to find that it was the best gig I’ve ever had - I love helping people be fully seen and heard and guiding them to express themselves from the heart.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is embracing the grind. It’s not all glamour and apple pie to start and run a business. The hard bits, the needed more difficult activities just need to get done, and accepting that is my major accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Resistance! It always is there as we grow and change as business owners, and we must grow and change as business owners in order to be successful. Every new endeavour, everything when the outcome is unknown, brings resistance. Embracing and welcoming that resistance as part of the process is key to getting on with it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Gird your loins. It will be tougher and lonelier than you think.
  2. The main weakness in your business is you. The main strength of your business is you. Be prepared to grow because that’s what it will take to succeed.
  3. Establish your practices and habits ASAP. Get the hard stuff done first and on schedule.
  4. Look after yourself. More than you think is necessary! Keeping your energy tank full will pay off hugely.
