What's your business, and who are your customers?
relevé is the ultimate destination for luxury women's activewear & loungewear. Founded by Toronto-based mom of two Gillian Medina, "relevé" (which is a French term for a basic ballet move) is a nod to her dance past. relevé offers fashionable options that are easy, comfortable, and flattering for your every day – whether you're working out, working from home, running errands, or heading out for dinner.
Tell us about yourself
I was working as a dental hygienist for about ten years. I had always dreamed of opening my own clothing boutique. When COVID hit in 2020, I left my job and decided that now was the time to get started on my dream. I'm doing what I love, so finding the motivation each day is easy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Starting a brand new business during COVID, when there was a lot of uncertainty. When many businesses were closing down, I made the decision to start a new venture.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I wouldn't characterize this as "hard," - but I do find that there is always something new to learn. You never have it completely figured out.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just get started.
- Hire help.
- Don't make cuts to your advertising budget.
