What's your business, and who are your customers?

I coach farmers on how to start and scale up a six-figure farm without taking on debt.

Tell us about yourself

I started growing my own food when we purchased a rural property of 9 acres. I enjoyed growing my own food naturally, and my friends and family said that the meat I was raising was the best they ever had. In addition to the better flavor and health benefits of the food, I could see a positive impact on our land, environment, and wildlife. I knew this was a win, win, win. So I became hooked on farming but realized it is a very difficult career. After struggling for many years, I finally achieved enough success to quit my full-time job. Now I want to make that transition easier for farmers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to share ideas and information with other like-minded people.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Having to pick up the slack when an employee unexpectedly doesn't show up or leaves.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remember, you don't have to do it all yourself. Find someone to help you.
  2. Minimize costs and maximize profit.
  3. At some point, you need to step back and focus on the business rather than on the business.
