Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Gallant, owner of Regal Beagle Bakery, located in Rutland, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We aren't your traditional bakery. We are an online bakery catering to dogs offering fresh-to-order custom cakes and dog treats for every occasion. Even though our end users are dogs, we aim to please their humans too, who are ultimately our customers. We feel connected to our loyal customers, some with us since our start in 2009, because we both share a passion for dogs and supporting their well-being.

Tell us about yourself

The idea for the Regal Beagle Bakery initially came from one of the largest food recalls in history. In 2007, after reports of sickened dogs, it was discovered that certain commercial brands of dog food and treats were contaminated with industrial chemicals. The goal of Regal Beagle Bakery was to provide our rescue Barney and our other dog friends a healthy alternative to the common store-bought treat. By being transparent with our ingredients, the bakery was able to provide a healthy dog treat that could be trusted.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is making it through the first decade of being in business and into the second, which began with the pandemic. We are proud that we were able to provide healthy dog treats that contributed to the overall well-being of hundreds of dogs during that time. Our most meaningful accomplishments involve times when we were able to help out an animal rescue or cause, such as becoming a business ambassador for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Over the years, we have helped to raise awareness for shelter adoption and the causes they address, including overpopulation, abuse, and neglect.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It has been a challenge to perform every function of the business. The creative end of the business comes more naturally. Taking the time to earn my B.S. in marketing has helped me to manage better and grow my business. It took dedication to balance both business and classes, but it was well worth the effort.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with a strong, well-thought-out business plan. You need a well-built foundation.
  2. Choose your business name wisely.
  3. Be passionate. It will reflect in every aspect of the business.
