Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Redman, Co-Founder of RedTip Productions, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is a film and video production company. We handle all aspects of a video project from inception to completion. Our customers are mainly musicians, record labels, commercial brands, and other media companies.

Tell us about yourself

I first created RedTip Productions in 2013 with my business partner Matt Tipold. We were just beginning film school together and fell into a couple of video gigs. We quickly wanted to give ourselves a brand, so RedTip was born. Over the next four years of school, we gradually gained a clientele, and by the time we graduated, we were able to dive straight into full-time with our company. Our roles as co-founders and executives have always been a means for us to navigate this film industry in 'our own way' and express ourselves creatively in our own medium. The goal and motivation for me as a writer/director and Matt as a cinematographer/editor has always been to reach the highest level of our profession. Our business has thankfully let us grow at our own pace and has been a stepping stone toward that goal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner, I don't think, can be pinpointed to one particular project or event. I think the biggest accomplishment is the fact that we've been able to grow every single year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner, especially in the early days, is the uncertainty. With the lack of business experience, you've got to trust your gut and believe you're on the right track, even if you're not initially seeing it monetarily.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you believe in it, stick with it.
  2. Network as much as possible without directly forcing your product on someone.
  3. Seek mentors.
