Tell us about yourself
I'm a student at the Mays School of Business at Texas A&M University. I'm the founder of ReddyMedia LLC. and an independent software engineer. When Covid hit, I had just finished high school and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Up until this point, my life consisted primarily of basketball and working out, so I never thought about what I'd do once that part of my life was over.
Luckily, I had a mentor come around and give me some advice about business, and I've been passionate about it ever since. The business allows me to do things I'd otherwise never be able to do. Business is the key I need in order for me to unlock the door standing between me and my biggest aspirations.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was putting my closest friends on salary and making sure that they're taken care of while they help me build my vision for the future. I'd also argue that being able to work with your closest friends to solve meaningful problems while not having to clock in for a job we'd hate without worrying about earning money is a victory in itself.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Isolation and solitude. I've spent a lot of my days working 10+ hours, usually by myself, in front of my computer before our business was generating significant positive cash flow. I had to take the risk and sacrifice spending a lot of time with friends and family to work on the company when nobody believed in it. It takes a lot of discipline and delusional self-confidence to pull something like this off, and I would not recommend this path to anyone lightly. This path gives you a different perspective which makes it harder to go back and relax with old friends as our lives are so different it's hard to find common grounds for meaningful relationships.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Consistency is key. Someone who enjoys walking will walk farther than someone who likes the destination.
- Always learn. Never think you know too much or disregard people's advice. As soon as you think you know something, you become a bad student.
- Look at business as solving problems. The better you solve problems, the more money you make. The bigger the problem you solve, the more money you make. The more efficient you get at solving the problem, the more money you make. What problem is your business solving?
