Your One-Stop Gift Shop - Red Customs Co.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Pohlig, owner of Red Customs Co., located in Mechanicsville, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Red Customs Co. provides the most unique drinkware, apparel, and seasonal gifts with hand-drawn designs. Red Customs also specializes in custom orders that will bring any vision of yours to life! My primary customers shop for gifts. They love coffee, animals, stickers and normally have a custom order or two in their head that they're dying to create.

Tell us about yourself

Hi! My name is Tiffany, and I'm a 20-year-old business owner. I have dreamed of being an entrepreneur since a very young age. I'd sell anything from lemonade to crafts to my clothes throughout my years. It's something that has always felt natural to me. My family takes the award for being my number one source of motivation to get through the highs and lows of owning a business. My parents owned a successful business in the past, which is what inspired me from a young age to start all the little side hustles that turned into my full-time job today.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be that I left my job in the Emergency Department as an EMT to work on my business full time. It's crazy to think that a little sticker business I started during COVID would turn into a full-time gig for me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is uncertainty. One day, you could get 20 orders, the next day 60, then the next day, zero. Your engagement could increase by 3000% one day and tank the next. You truly get out of a business what you put into it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get over your fear (that everyone has) of what people will say about you behind your back. Once you learn not to let that bother you, your business will soar because you will.
  2. Just start it. Don't overthink it. It could be the best decision you've ever made.
  3. Don't get discouraged on bad days. Every business will experience slow seasons and bad days. Getting through those days truly makes you a better and more-skilled entrepreneur.
