Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in design and marketing services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Maguire, Founder of Rebecca Leigh Designs, LLC, located in Centennial, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an illustrator, graphic designer + marketing professional specializing in the outdoor industry. I work with clients all over the United States, many of which are campground owners or run small recreation programs. I help small businesses, even beyond the outdoor industry, with various support, including full-service graphic design, business management and organization, marketing, and web support.

Tell us about yourself

I fell in love with print design early on in life, starting to work on my school's yearbook in fifth grade and continuing all through college. My passion is graphic design, but I balance out my creative endeavors with a logical and analytical mind, leading me to focus on graphic design with a purpose: marketing and communications.

With my background in communication and marketing, I bring a unique perspective on projects to help clients make an impact and grow their businesses. While the things I create should be beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, they must serve a purpose. I must find a way to marry beauty and purpose into my work.

I love helping small businesses grow and see the value of well-designed collateral. Every day is a different challenge, as no business is the same, so it is fun to have variety in my life. I am always excited to help solve a business problem or make someone's idea a reality.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm almost on my second anniversary of focusing on my business full-time. I have loved connecting with various clients all over the country, and I seriously love every project I've done, including large projects, a billboard, custom illustrations, and ebook sets for large international companies. The biggest accomplishment, though, has been doing all this while raising two young children and being there for them daily.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There is a sacrifice with time and money — there is never enough of it! Especially with two young kids, but we are learning to take each day as it comes. I've worked long days and late nights, but it is all worth it when my client is happy! It is hard to be responsible for everything — finding customers and managing finances, but my clients make it worth it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it, but be ready to work hard and odd hours!
  2. Be consistent and persistent. Starting a business is hard, but show up every day, even on the hard days, especially on the hard days.
  3. Surround yourself with like-minded people. Support other small businesses, consider trading services with other small businesses to help each other grow (get testimonials + honest feedback).
