Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Cohen, Founder of Rebecca Cohen Yoga, located in Batavia, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a yoga therapist and teach private yoga sessions and online classes. I specialize in pain management and mental wellness. My customers for in-person sessions are typically those that are out of options for pain management, and they decide to try yoga therapy as a last resort. My online students are usually seasoned practitioners that like my specific style of teaching.

Tell us about yourself

I first started practicing yoga 25 years ago due to a spinal injury. I was told I needed surgery. I started a routine of chiropractic and massage therapy, but that didn't help. I somehow found my way into a yoga class and loved it. After ten years of practicing four times per week, my back pain was completely gone. Twenty-five years later, and with a lot of extra training, I'm very good at what I do. I can usually get my clients into a noticeable state of pain reduction in 6 weeks or less. I am motivated each day because I know what I do changes people's quality of life, and they depend on me throughout their healing journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The fact that I have weathered all of the changes in the industry and still have a sustainable yoga business that supports my two children and me. So many yoga studios went out of business during 2020.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is keeping up with all of the details in the business and keeping an online presence.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Nobody has time; you have to make time.
  2. Remember to compliment yourself on what you have accomplished. Sometimes the finish line is so far away that it's easy to forget how much you have already done.
  3. The trivial details that don't work out are usually the universe looking out for your best interests.
