The Psychology of Child Sleep Training - Rebecca Askew

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Askew, Founder of The Psychology of Child Sleep Training, located in Geddington, Northants, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a psychologist, baby and child sleep consultant, educator, and parenting expert. I work on a one-to-one basis with clients helping them to achieve age-appropriate sleep for their baby or child. I also train other dedicated professionals to become sleep consultants.

Tell us about yourself

I have four children (now grown up) who did not sleep well; the sleep deprivation was horrendous. When my grandson came along and didn't sleep, I knew there was another way to help him learn to sleep better, and I knew I could not see my son and daughter-in-law struggle as I did. By this time, I was a qualified psychologist and knew the science behind sleep, and that sleep was not a lottery, you either got a 'good sleeper,' or you didn't, was not true. I knew good sleep sometimes had to be a learned behaviour. I, therefore, trained as a sleep consultant to help other sleep-deprived babies, children, and their families. Sleep is my passion; I am constantly reading the latest scientific research on sleep. As far as I am concerned, the importance of sleep is not taken seriously enough.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing and gaining accreditation for my sleep consultant course and seeing my student's businesses thrive.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not being able to switch off very easily.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have some money behind you to ease the financial pressure while your business becomes established.
  2. Find something you are truly passionate about. If you love what you do, you will be successful.
  3. Don't let self-doubt hold you back; see it as an opportunity to assess where you are and what you need to do to get you to where you want to be.
