Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness  but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nick Longhurst, Founder of Realm Fitness, located in Sydney, NSW, AU.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an online personal training academy where I help busy executives to lose weight and build strength without gaining it back.

Tell us about yourself

My whole life, I've always been passionate about sports. After graduating from university with a bachelor's degree in exercise science, the transition into strength and conditioning coaching was quite natural. Across the span of 6 years, I went from group coaching to one-on-one personal training to now providing a unique coaching experience fully online.

What has continually kept me coming back for more is just being able to help people. Whether it's doing their first pull-up or helping them feel more comfortable in their clothes, I love being able to provide genuine value to my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To date, becoming a published author by writing my very first book 'A Recipe for Fitness' and making the transition from face-to-face training to an online business model.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Taking full accountability for your actions. When you start your own business, it's just you. You don't have a team (yet), and there's a lot of trial and error. Consistently showing up every day and taking action to move your business forward in the right direction has been the biggest challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have to be passionate about what you do. Running a business can be extremely difficult at times, so you have to have a fire lit within you that gets you excited to get up each day and put in the work!
  2. Hire people to help you, whether it's a business coach, a course, or building a team. Learn from the mistakes that other people have made to help you progress faster, rather than trying to figure it out all on your own.
  3. Fail fast and learn from your mistakes. As a new business owner, there will be many challenges that you will have to face. You're not going to get it right all the time. But, be okay with this. Know and appreciate that failure is a part of the process, and it will help you grow when you learn and can pivot quickly.
