Real Food. Real Life. Real Solutions - Real Nutrition NYC

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Shapiro, founder of Real Nutrition NYC, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Registered Dietitian with a private practice that provides realistic solutions to your nutrition goals so you can enjoy your everyday life. I focus on incorporating more whole foods in order to "crowd out" but not eliminate less healthy options. All of my recommendations fit within your lifestyle so you can meet and maintain your goals long-term.

I currently sit on the medical board of a few different organizations and provide nutrition consulting to brands/companies. Finally, I love public speaking and often visit companies and corporations to lecture large and small groups on nutrition basics to promote optimal health in the workplace and at home.

Tell us about yourself

This is my second career; however, I have been practicing health and wellness since I was born. My father is in the supplement/vitamin industry, and as a child, we owned multiple health food stores. All of my jobs prior to college were within these stores, and I quickly grew to love the demographic, products, and lifestyle even though it was not "cool" at the time. I worked in corporate for eight years and tried to maintain a foothold in wellness by being a yoga instructor on the side and reading everything I could get my hands on about nutrition. Finally, I decided to go back to school to get my dietitian licensure and masters in nutrition, so I could do what I loved.

After a few years of working in hospitals and then at another private practice in Manhattan, I stayed true to myself. I opened my own practice that focused on whole food, a healthy lifestyle, active living, and approachable goals. After 15 years, I am still passionate about my message and am honored to have helped many many individuals feel better and live their best lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Running and growing my business while raising a family. I am a mom to three boys - twin ten-year-olds and a 13-year-old. Life is busy, but I'm Ok with that. I work hard as a business owner and as a mother, and my boys know that. That is my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing work and family is #1. Number two is being the boss, learning to delegate, give direction and lean on others to continue to build my ideal business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it.
  2. Recognize this will be hard; there are no days off.
  3. Find a great team.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't second guess yourself. If you want it, do it. And if you do it, do it 110% every damn day!
