Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Giselle Quintanilla, Owner of Ready Writer Services LLC., located in Woodbury, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business offers coaching for writing, ghostwriting, and editing services that include layout and formatting. I work with writers and authors, people who want to get their stories out in the form of print or eBook. I also translate manuscripts to Spanish for clients with a Spanish-speaking target audience. My clients are people who have stories, either fiction or nonfiction, that are uplifting and encourage others to overcome any situation. Their stories breathe life into the reader with every page.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been a writer, and as a child, I loved the grammatical part of the English language. I grew up reading a lot of books, and I was fascinated by them. But I didn't realize this was part of my purpose until I was out of a job, finding my path, and trying to provide for my family. I wanted to start a blog and simply write for a living. My friend, Thilana, reached out and held me accountable through her own coaching program. In 2018, she helped me realize my purpose and passion. She guided me through setting up my blog and encouraged me to write my first book, Armed and Purposed. The launch of both was the catalyst that started my path towards becoming a business owner!

My close friend Jasmine decided to write her book, and I wanted to help her by editing it. Then, another mutual friend became my first unofficial client, and I helped her write and publish her first book. From there, I discovered my zeal for helping others share their stories through books! Ready Writer Services, LLC was launched that same year (October 2018). Knowing that I get to walk alongside my clients as they share their amazing stories and that readers get to reap the benefits, that is what motivates me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think the biggest accomplishment as a business owner comes continually. It's not just one thing for me because the biggest accomplishments come when I get a picture of my client with their book in their hand, when I attend their book launches and see them shining, or when I receive notes or thank you cards. My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing the fruit of my labor consistently and knowing that it's good, but it's also growing my client base through referrals. I never take that for granted!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I believe one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner (and there are many) is understanding motivation versus discipline. Motivation is fantastic. I remind myself daily of my "why." Why am I doing this? Why am I getting up at a certain hour, reading through multiple manuscripts, dealing with difficult situations at times, working late sometimes, etc.? Being a business owner has its challenges, uncertainties, and doubts. And you don't always feel like doing these things. Your why will motivate you but reminding yourself constantly of it, and pushing yourself past your feelings, will establish discipline. It allows you to keep going and do the work that you love, even when you don't feel like doing it. When business owners can develop discipline, they can excel in spite of feelings or life circumstances.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself and your business even when others don't or when times get tough - don't quit.
  2. Know your worth and the value you and your business bring; this helps understand the pricing of your products or services.
  3. Your time is valuable and worth more than money. With discipline to work, also develop the discipline to take time off to rest - that's when you get witty ideas for your business.
