Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Cummings, co-founder of Reading With RIK, located in Provo, UT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Reading With RIK (Reading Incentive Kit) is a monthly book and kit subscription kit that helps motivate readers with story-related prizes and "think pieces" to open as they progress through the book. Reading With RIK makes reading fun, improves reading skills, and boosts comprehension.
Tell us about yourself
I joined this business as a co-owner. Paula Ruesch is an elementary school librarian, avid reader, and children's literature aficionado. She created the company as a solution to problems she was seeing with young readers. Namely, they had a hard time finishing books and learning to love reading. I love the mission of this company, especially considering how important it is for kids to not only learn how to read but to learn to love to read. The company isn't a product. It's a tool to open the world of literature to children and a way to decrease screen time.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The product and how it's changing young kids' lives is the biggest accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Marketing with a small budget is challenging. It requires a lot of work and creativity.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Focus on building an excellent product.
- Talk to your audience.
- Stay consistent.
