Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in real estate but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sharon Caddy, Real Estate Broker of RE/MAX Realty Specialists Inc., located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Real Estate Broker working in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario. I work primarily in residential real estate, helping my clients buy and sell homes. Whether they are first-time buyers, moving up or downsizing, I am here to help them through their real estate journey.
Tell us about yourself
Real estate is my second career. I spent 30 years as an on-air broadcaster on radio and television. After 30 years, I needed a new challenge, so I returned to school to get my real estate license. I love what I do! It's all about working with people and helping them through one of the biggest purchases of their life. It's so satisfying to help with something that is such a major part of their lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Honestly, just getting the business off the ground was my biggest accomplishment. It's never easy stepping into something completely new, especially after having a long-term successful career. Now I consider each and every deal my biggest accomplishment because each deal is the most important deal to that individual client.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the uncertainty, especially in the early days. Just balancing the cost of being in business with trying to keep enough money coming in. It was especially challenging when COVID hit, as I was just about a year into my new business. However, for me facing hard times just raises my resolve to be successful. I just dug in my heels, head down, and full steam ahead. While challenging at times, I really enjoy the work.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Focus on time management. Be a planner. You learn very quickly that time is money and time managed efficiently is very important.
- Make sure you schedule time for yourself and your family. It's easy to burn out if you don't.
- Perhaps the most important piece of advice came from a very experienced colleague of mine. She said always focus on the work. Just do the work, and the money will follow. If you chase the money, you'll always be chasing the money.
