What's your business, and who are your customers?
My current business focuses on extending my extensive expertise as an executive advisor, leadership consultant, professional speaker, and coach to guide innovation transformation, human development, and business growth for companies around the world. My customers range between individual professionals and early-stage entrepreneurs to executive leaders to small, medium, and large enterprises.
Tell us about yourself
At heart, I'm an enterprising individual. I began my entrepreneurial journey at a very young age because I was always eager to carve my own path. Over the past 16-17 years, I started and grew multiple successful businesses. What motivates me each day to do what I do is my passion for solving complex problems and exploring new paradigms that bridge technology with business and social innovation to advance our collective experience and empower people to thrive across levels. For me, the emphasis has always been on making a positive change through everything I do, whether that is through my business ventures, impact initiatives, investments, partnerships, or philanthropic activities. And that's what I strive to empower other entrepreneurs to do as well.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
At this particular time, I consider my biggest accomplishment is the successful acquisition of my third company at its highest potential valuation, which was finalized recently. As Founder and former CEO of ID4A Technologies, I built a global company whose cutting-edge developments have been revolutionizing manufacturing processes and creating significant environmental, economic and social impact worldwide. Under my leadership, ID4A was recognized by the White House Office of Science and Technology for 'Fostering The Development of Advanced Manufacturing in the US as The World' ranked on Entrepreneur 360's list of the "Best Entrepreneurial Companies in America" and honored on Inc. 5000 List of "America's Fastest Growing Private Companies" received Real Leaders "100 Top Impact Companies" Award and other global honors, including Fast Company's World Changing Ideas Awards for the company's innovative "Pandemic Response" and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's 2021 Citizens Awards for "Best Economic Opportunity and Empowerment Program." Through my initiatives and my company's commitments to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, over 2000 businesses adopted sustainable practices. Additionally, we contributed to reducing labor exploitation in global production pipelines by improving the skills and working conditions of over 2 million industrial workers by the end of 2021. These initiatives will continue to grow moving forward as well.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest parts is facing the unpredictability of everyday challenges and obstacles that come with being a business owner. Especially when you're a business leader and CEO, you have to be "on" all the time, which takes a tremendous toll on your mental health and well-being. The reality is that no matter how much planning you do, you can never predict the future or be in full control of every situation.
However, you can navigate through unknowns, tackle challenges and find solutions by getting into the right mindset to build resilience, adapt to change, create certainty within yourself, and stay focused on overcoming obstacles. That said, your mindset is your biggest asset. It impacts all aspects of your life and business, and it makes all the difference in your success and growth journey.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Starting, running, and growing a new business is not for the faint of heart. It is the riskiest, toughest, and most challenging journey at every level. But it can also be the most fulfilling experience that opens new possibilities for success and propels you into incredible heights of growth, both professionally and personally. My first tip is to be introspective with yourself to answer critical questions, identify the true potential of your new business idea, assess your skills realistically, determine the actions that you need to take, and evaluate your mental and emotional readiness before stepping on an entrepreneurial path. Because the journey will be full of mistakes, challenges, and setbacks, it will require a clear vision, absolute commitment, drive, and unshakable willpower, along with an ability to adapt, learn and implement quickly. Many new business owners spend too much time planning that they never really learn how their business is going to run. In the early stages, I advise that you divide your time by 25% for planning and 75% for testing and executing.
My second tip is to round out the skills necessary to excel. In order to succeed, you must become proficient on multiple fronts. Making confident, effective decisions is the most valuable skill you can learn when starting a new business as it relates to stockholders, boards, employees, vendors, customers, the media, and the public to ensure the success of your venture. Business is heavily dependent on your ability to build relationships, instill trust, and inspire cooperation with others. Be ready to work on building your reputation and networks. Your reputation is one of your biggest assets and your real business card.
Lastly, it's impractical to think of work-life as a complete separation between the professional and personal worlds when you become an entrepreneur. There will be no distinct boundaries. You'll have to focus on work-life integration to incorporate the different areas of your life in ways that are conducive to your personal development, as well as the growth of your business.
