Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Randa Derkson, Owner of Randa Nutrition, located in Vernon, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help busy and overworked moms hit their goals without diets and deprivation. I do this with macros, as I found with my clients that no foods are truly off limits, and it still provides a little structure (which is perfect for my Type A clients). I teach these amazing women that there are options with last-minute drive-thru decisions or cooking easy recipes from home.

Tell us about yourself

I've been a blogger for years, and after I sold my food blog, I knew I wanted to go into the nutrition route. I have been through the wringer with my own health, and after having my daughter, I realized I couldn't do the yo-yo dieting anymore, and it was time to find something sustainable.

I didn't want my children to see their mother, who was always on a diet, or someone who skipped the ice cream and pizza nights. I want them to be raised in a household where there are healthy food habits (and that includes eating pizza together as a family without guilt or worry).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There are so many. My business is multi-faceted, from viral views on social media to recipes getting rave reviews - I get excited over everything. The best, though, is when I have a client realize that she doesn't have to be scared of carbs and that sandwiches can be a healthy meal. Seeing those transformations always makes me tear up a little bit because I was in that struggle once too.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Doing it all. It simply doesn't happen. If I am "with it" in my business, I'm dropping the ball with my family. It's hard to juggle it. There are so many platforms out there too, where I get burnt out easily and have to take breaks from time to time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself. You will have moments where you're second-guessing your decision to start a business, but you got this! Keep pushing.
  2. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Do your best to diversify your income. If you're a digital service base, see if you can add affiliate marketing in there. If you're recommending the products already, have a blog - work on quality content to qualify for a good ad network like AdThrive or Mediavine. Never settle for one stream of income.
  3. Set boundaries with yourself when it comes to how much time to truly spend on your business. Eight hours can easily turn into 12, which only leads to burnout.
