Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alejandra Rodriguez, Founder of Raitit, located in llucmajor, Baleares, Spain.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Money is a tool we all have, but most of us don't know how to use it. I have a personal finance online school where people with regular salaries learn how to use their money to reach their personal goals.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a craft teacher, but I've worked in aviation most of my life. I thought I was doing fine with the money until my husband, at the time, lost his job. That's when I realized we had no clue about personal finances. And also, that's when my journey began. I started learning and also teaching my friends and family along the way because I saw how a few simple steps and a little bit of financial education could completely change your life for the better.
What motivated me at the beginning is the same thing that keeps me motivated nowadays: the feedback from my students. When they share their stories, and I see how the things they've learned have changed their lives—how they live a life without debt, with savings, and even investments—and how they reach their goals, little and small, that's my fuel.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To become one! As a person who knew nothing about business, marketing, digital tools, video creation, copy, or anything at all, to create a profitable business, a successful YouTube channel, two books, a financial planner, and an online school that helps a lot of people from more than 20 different countries around the world is a huge accomplishment for me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Be your own boss. Have the discipline to keep going when nobody is looking and when you have no idea if what you are doing is going to work or not.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First of all, have a good "why," because at the beginning, it's a lot of hard work with no benefits; if you don't have a good purpose, it's easy to quit.
Then, to educate yourself, you don't need to know how to do everything, but you do need to have a basic knowledge base to either do the things yourself or know if the person you are hiring to do the job is the right one.
Ask for help. It's very easy to try to do everything by ourselves when we have a small project and little money to start with. But out there, there are a lot of people who know things that you don't and can save you a lot of time and money. So, if you don't know something, ask someone who does.
