For Parents in the Weeds - Raising Rooted Kids

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rhea Grogan, Founder of Raising Rooted Kids, located in Bend, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Raising Rooted Kids, A Parenting Community. Our customers are parents and caregivers of kids ages 0-10. We share lots of good kid-raising content online and hold spaces for kid-raising together in Bend, Oregon.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a mama who used my tough postpartum experiences to reimagine the support available to parents in the early years. I'm inspired every day to find solutions for new parents to navigate the often overwhelming and isolating early years of parenting. I lean into the values of time in NATURE, an intention to NURTURE relationships between parent + child + community and NOURISH the social and emotional health of the whole family.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The things that feel the biggest to me are the little things: an overwhelmed mama works with me to find her rhythm during dicey mornings with her 3 and 5-year-old.... a family in emotional overwhelm reports using one of my grounding tools to bring everyone back to regulation... after my coaching, a heart-to-heart between mother and son brings them out of friction + anger and into connection + warmth... all the reports of feeling seen as a parent in the spaces I hold. All the little things are only measured in their relational ripple effect over time.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I'm most challenged by being alone as an entrepreneur. Finding colleagues to continue growing with + bounce ideas off, as well as reaching the families that would benefit from my offerings. In addition, that total freedom of schedule: is both a gift and a curse.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If it lights YOU up, it will be covered in your light and inevitably light others up.
  2. Volume control: turn up the positive internal talk and turn down the inner critic.
  3. It starts slow, but the growth increases exponentially as you stick to your goals.
