What's your business, and who are your customers?

Design, manufacture, and market the Railyard Portable Obstacle Course, an exercise product for youth activities in schools, fitness facilities, and sports conditioning.

Tell us about yourself

I have a long and varied career in the sports and fitness industries, from acquiring the boxing equipment brand Tuf-Wear and building it into a worldwide supplier of fight and training equipment to creating the first fitness-specific flooring system for aerobics, the stack-able aerobic step-for-step aerobics, the equipment for fitness equipment, co-founder of a chain for exercise equipment stores, building a B-C eCommerce site in 1999 providing durable medical directly to consumers called TherapyZone.com, to name a few. My passion now is to make youth exercise a trend, convincing parents, the government, and society that are working toward a healthier next generation is needed and important.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My designs and products have helped millions of people around the world lead healthier and more productive life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The greatest challenge today is finding supply, operational, and distribution partners who are as customer service-focused as I am.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a detailed plan that includes who your customer truly is - not who you think it is.
  2. Pay attention to details; if that's not your strength, get someone who is involved.
  3. Identify your product or service's unique features and offer those to a niche consumer group interested in those specific features.
