Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sherilee Baker, Owner of Rags to Reaches Digital Marketing, located in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Rags to Reaches Digital Marketing focuses primarily on local businesses. Our target clients are small to medium-sized businesses looking at professional marketing results with a personalized strategy.
Tell us about yourself
Over a decade ago, I started a small e-commerce business as a side hustle. I had to learn to navigate the online marketing terrain and grow my business to where it could support me as more than just a side hustle. I also joined a friend who was growing her social media management business, which gave me more insights and experience with other industries. As our businesses grew, I started working with other small businesses in social media marketing and found a calling for email marketing and pay-per-click, so I started a digital marketing company. Every day I get to be creative and think outside the box for my clients, and I love it. As a mom, I get to spend more time with my kid during the day with a flexible schedule and enjoy things a 9-5 wouldn't usually allow.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing this business from scratch has been my biggest accomplishment. Creating something from nothing is a huge accomplishment and a win that everyone should be able to celebrate.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Balance is the hardest thing to get right as a business owner, at least in my experience. Since there are no defined boundaries, like a normal 9-5, you have to establish your own boundaries to maintain a balance as a person outside of your business too. This is an ongoing process that often requires revisiting to maintain the ideal balance for every stage of your life and business progress.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- The best tip would be to just get started. Waiting for everything to align and be perfect will delay any progress you could be making. Learn as you go - almost everyone has to.
- Know your strengths and weaknesses. If you can, don't do it alone. Find someone who can help you with the things you struggle with, whether it is finance-related, marketing, or even administrative. Having someone else fill in the gaps will make the process so much smoother and less stressful.
- Take time for yourself. Self-care, in whatever form that works for you, is important. It is so often repeated because it is important. Burnout is a real issue, especially in the entrepreneur community, so make sure to keep doing the things you love that are just for you. Work can wait.
