Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Paula Sturm, owner and CEO of Radically Nourished, located in San Diego, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own Radically Nourished, a virtual a Function Medical Nutrition practice located out of San Diego. In my practice, I focus on helping people who are struggling to manage their autoimmune condition, who have uncomfortable GI issues, and those struggling to manage their hormones. Mainly, people come to see me after they've tried the gamut of diets, seen a number of doctors and practitioners, and still don't feel any better or have been told there is absolutely nothing wrong. Even though they struggle with energy levels, can't sleep, suffer from food cravings, aches and pains, stubborn weight loss, bloating, heartburn, and often feel like they are losing the life they once knew.
I help look under all the stones that are left unturned. I put the puzzle pieces of their journey together and find the missing pieces that can make all the difference in how they feel. Using diet, strategic testing, lifestyle strategies, targeted supplements, mindset work, and continued support and care, I help guide their bodies back to themselves. I've helped people relieve their lifelong GI issues, clear up acne, promote fertility in women who've been struggling to get pregnant, regain energy levels, lose stubborn weight, achieve their fitness goals, and feel better than they have in years.
Tell us about yourself
Pursuing functional nutrition was a second career for me. After becoming passionate about my own health and fitness, I went back to school to become a Registered Dietitian. While completing my education, I realized I really wanted to work in the preventative space vs. working in a hospital, which most RDs end up doing. I really wanted to prevent people from ending up in the hospital in the first place. I felt so helpless when I was doing my internship at the Mayo Clinic because, at that point, nutrition was powerful enough to reverse their condition, it was just managing it.
That's when I set out to pursue further training in Functional Medical Nutrition, Genomics, and Gastrointestinal Nutrition. I chose to open my practice because I had a unique set of skills that I wanted to share with as many people as possible. It allowed me the freedom to practice how I wanted to practice and how I knew would be the most effective. In addition to the medical side of things, I also have training in mind-body modalities like Food and Spirit and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). I find it's helpful to have a whole-body approach, physical, mental, and emotional.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Just starting one! Working through the turmoil and coming out the other side with a thriving business, even though I wanted to quit so many times!!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Overworking! There always feels like there is so much to do. Trying to catch up can take away precious downtime with yourself and your loved ones.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't overthink! Just start doing what you love. You'll work out the kinks along the way.
- Start getting your social media presence down while you have the time :)
- Find your ideal client or whom you want to serve. Really niche it down, don't go too broad, or your message will be diluted.
