What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Career and Executive Coach. I help people figure out What's Next in their careers. I work with a variety of people, including Students about to graduate (undergrad, grad, BootCamp), An individual looking for a job now, Someone returning to the workforce after a hiatus, Folks exploring What's Next in their career, and Leaders looking to advance/get promoted in their career, An executive looking to pivot or expand their experiences, Individuals switching/pivoting their career: function/industry.
Tell us about yourself
I love people and working with them. I love learning about how each of us is different in the way we think, live, and believe. Through coaching, I expand my ability to provide people guidance and different perspectives so they can make choices as they continue to move forward in their careers, especially with the changing times around us.
I got into it because I was doing it on my own during my corporate career. My peers and those in the same program as me would come to me and ask about what they should do next. The conversations and coaching that we had helped many individuals leave fulfilled and on a journey that was right for them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was getting my first corporate client and then getting the same client to spend money on my second company's product.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is doing everything on your own, especially the administrative part of the business. When you are good at what you do, you want to do that all the time. However, running a business does include making the admin, legal, operations, marketing, sales, etc.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know who you are - your strengths, what you don't like to do, your challenges, the way you think, etc. Be very self-aware of what you have and what it takes to run a business.
- Lean on your strengths and find people you can lean on for your weaknesses.
- Don't feel like you have to do everything alone. Learn to allow yourself to lean on others.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Having your own business is freeing mentally and emotionally. It can also be draining mentally and financially. It's not easy to start a business.
Think about why you are starting a business. Is it to get financial security in the long run or to make a quick buck in the short run? These are two different journeys, and you need to be self-aware to know what journey you want to be on.
