Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Reclam, Founder of RachelReclam, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an instructional designer who works with coaches, consultants, and creative business owners. My customers want to expand their reach and scale their businesses by turning what they know into an online course.

Tell us about yourself

I come from a traditional instructional design background, having done course development work for companies, non-profits, and government agencies. I realized there was a huge need among individuals who wanted to create their courses but may not know where to start or how to structure their content effectively.

I work with my clients to help them organize their content and turn it into an engaging course that helps their learners achieve their goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is seeing my clients launch their courses with confidence.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Make sure you carve out time to work on your business, not just in your business—It's so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations of client service and running your business. But you need to schedule a time to step back, review how things are going, and plan for the future.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Embrace minimum viable products: Put something out there and get started/start getting feedback. This will help you get to know your audience and create the best possible outcome.
  2. Make a business model that works for your life. It might not happen right away, but you want to be building toward something that will meet your needs (financially, personally, creatively, etc.). This won't happen by accident. While your plan will likely need to shift as you go, make sure you have a plan in mind that can realistically meet your needs.
  3. Protect your boundaries. Your time is your most important asset as a new business owner. Make sure you are investing your hours in things that support your goals. Another trap is getting stuck doing time-intensive tasks that don't help you get to where you want to be. Make sure you spend most of your time doing activities that help you generate income and only say yes to opportunities that align with your goals.
