Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Hilts, Founder of Rachel Hilts Nutrition Counselling, located in Halifax, NS, CA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a registered dietitian specializing in reproductive and hormone health. I provide one-on-one nutrition counseling as well as online courses, masterclasses, and e-guides. I work with clients who have PCOS, Endometriosis, Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, Infertility, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), or just want to make sure they are doing everything right to support a healthy pregnancy, get a regular period back, or heal a disordered relationship with food.
Tell us about yourself
I completed my degree at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, NS - through my education, I realized the huge impact that food and nutrition can have on improving our health and changing our lives, especially when we make stages at the preconception or pregnancy stage. Since completing my degree, I have taken additional coursework in breastfeeding management, pregnancy, fertility, and eating disorders. I practice from a Health at Every Size ® approach and focus on intuitive and mindful eating practices. I am passionate about helping my clients have a healthy relationship with food and their body while building sustainable habits to achieve their health goals. I've combined my passion for prenatal nutrition and women's health with additional trainings in eating disorders and intuitive eating. My goal is to support people with their goals of balancing hormones, improving fertility, increasing energy, or supporting a healthy pregnancy, all while providing a safe and nonjudgmental space without any food shame or guilt.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching my own practice during the early days of a pandemic was terrifying but exciting. I am so proud of my business's growth since then, connecting with hundreds of others wanting to improve their reproductive health and relationships with food. I've successfully launched an online course in PCOS and have another one coming soon for fertility nutrition
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There are constant ups and downs, with some weeks setting records and others being slow and discouraging. It can sometimes be challenging to think of the bigger picture when you're in the middle of a slow week and trying to get by.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a support system in place - the early days (or years!) can be mentally and financially challenging.
- Connect with others in a similar position - in my early days in business, I met weekly with a group of women in business and found it so inspiring. Their business areas were all different, but it was amazing to connect, talk to challenges, and cheer each other on.
- Don't wait for everything to be perfect - it might not ever be the 'right' time. If this is something you want to do, sometimes you have to take a leap!
