Low-Content Profits Academy - Rachel Harrison-Sund

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Harrison-Sund, an online business educator based in Langley, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help aspiring online entrepreneurs create a sustainable online business, and my flagship program, Low-Content Profits Academy teaches its students how to generate passive income by creating and selling journals, planners, notebooks, and more on the Kindle Direct Publishing platform.

Tell us about yourself

I started out as an acutely dissatisfied Art Director working in a multinational advertising agency. I knew I didn't want to spend 60+ hours a week creating things that no one wants to see (advertisements) while locked inside someone else's idea of when, where, and how much to work. I craved the freedom to create my own schedule, working when and where I wanted, with no ceiling on my earning potential.

Like millions of others have done before me, I Googled "how to make money online" and came across the idea of self-publishing on the Kindle Direct Publishing platform as a business model—the essence of which is to hop onto Amazon, conduct research to find out what types of books people are searching for, outsource the writing, then publish them on Amazon and collect the royalties (I love to write but outsourcing this portion allowed me to publish multiple books simultaneously, thus scaling more quickly).

I initially tried my hand with nonfiction, progressed to fiction, eventually discovering "low-content" books (planners, journals, notebooks, activity books, coloring books, etc.). With my design background, I was able to create these books in their entirety on my own, meaning no outsourcing and no expenses—I could keep all of the profits. Within a year of pivoting to low-content publishing, I enjoyed my first 6-figure year.

Once I experienced success, I had many people asking what I was doing and how I was doing it. This was when I decided to start a Youtube channel and create a digital course—Low-Content Profits Academy—where I could teach others how to follow in my footsteps.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a digital course that has helped over 2,000 students embark on their own self-publishing journey and start creating a meaningful source of passive income. I also feel very proud of having created a half-million-dollar-a-year business over the course of just three years, and I can't wait to take it even further next year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are many challenges (as well as rewards!), but the most salient challenge for me right now is balancing motherhood with business ownership. Pre-kids, if I fell behind on a deadline, I could easily get back on track with a few late nights, but that luxury has vanished for the time being. I have a very limited daily number of available hours to work in my business because I'm committed to being present with my husband and children from 6 pm onwards. On the flip side, this is a great opportunity to learn how to best optimize my working hours, from systems and workflow implementation to time management and mindset!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Accept and expect failure as just another part of the process. I see too many people throw in the towel after a setback, don't slam the door in your own face! Successful people know that setbacks are coming; they plan for them and know that they are capable of recovering and getting back on track.
  2. Be willing to invest in yourself. Every major leap forward for me has come after I've taken a course, joined a mastermind, spoken with a coach, etc. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Learn from those who've gone before you and implement what you learn.
  3. Be patient and be willing to play the long game. Success doesn't happen overnight, despite what you might see on social media. Those that win are those that put in the consistent daily effort. As R. Collier said so wisely, "Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out."
