What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a photographer, and my businesses include Rabbit & Fox Photography, Little Rabbit Studio, and Birth 5280. My clients are mostly families and often those who are pregnant or have just welcomed new babies. I offer maternity, birth, newborn, and family photography. I am also a certified birth/labor doula and provide prenatal and labor support to families. I recently opened my own natural light photography studio, and it has been so much fun!
Tell us about yourself
I have always been artistically inclined and first learned photography in high school and college. My experiences of having three children with midwives inspired my passion for birth work. I have a BFA, and I love working with families. I love being creative and making art and documenting memories for the clients, I get to work with.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been having the perseverance to keep going. I had my busiest year so far this last year, and I also recently opened my studio. It was challenging having Covid thrown into the mix in my early career when I was trying to take care of three children and build a business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The biggest challenge I have found has a good work/life balance. As much as I love being in charge of my own schedule, it can also be challenging to ever feel like I am completely "off work," especially when I am on call for a birth.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Join online groups where there are people doing similar work as you and where you can ask questions and get feedback. Network! Be prepared to commit to the long haul - I read early on that it generally takes around three years to build a photography business, and I found that to be pretty close to the truth for me - just keep going!
