Building a Better World - R&G Strategic

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Gosselin, Co-Founder of R&G Strategic, located in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a co-founder of R&G Strategic; we provide ESG and communications consulting. We've supported over 80 businesses, including TD, QuadReal, Alcoa, MiTek, Ubisoft, MonsterCat, Wildlife Conservation Society, Shawcor, and GoGold. R&G's team is a passionate mix of deeply-experienced professionals who work at the intersection of branding, technology, ESG and sustainability, and communications design. We work collaboratively with our customers to rethink business for good and share their impact stories with investors, stakeholders, or customers. Whether they're launching a new cleantech product, educating and raising awareness on environmental and social issues, or creating digital platforms to advocate and engage for a better world—we get it, and we're here to help.

Tell us about yourself

While studying at NSCAD University, I took an interest in circular design. I became interested in businesses focused on social and environmental good. My business partner and I saw there were no other businesses mixing our services together and found there was a lot of interest in it.

Being a BCorp, we live our values and are motivated each day to help businesses make an impact.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It's been amazing to hear from businesses located all around the globe about our services. It's been reassuring that we're making an impact. I'm also very proud of all the awards, opportunities, and certifications our team has achieved.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You always need to be ready to adapt to change. Systems need to constantly be re-evaluated and changed as a business grows. What's working today might not fit tomorrow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Talk to other business owners doing things similar to what you might want to do. Knock on their doors, take them for coffee, and ask them everything you can think of. In my experience, people willing to give you a bit of their time will be honest about what this type of business ownership looks like. They'll give you knowledge that could take you days or months to find on your own.
  2. Find good mentors. As a business owner, you'll be doing tasks you've never dreamed of doing before. Make sure you have people around you who have the expertise to guide you on this new path.
  3. Hire a coach or consultant when you can. Having outside eyes on your business can be extremely valuable. If they specialize in your field, they can guide you through systems and processes they've mastered instead of having to create your own with no experience.
