Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion bags but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nia Nguyen, creative director of Quyenn, located in Beverly Hills, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Quyenn is a contemporary handbag and leather goods company that was founded in 2021. Each piece starts with the softest Italian lamb leather and is hand-selected for its unique aesthetics. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and hand-crafted with particular attention to the hardware and raw elements.
My bags are timeless. When I think about designing for a particular audience, it seems too limiting. Quyenn bags appeal to any woman who is a doer, a dreamer, a woman who understands what it means to be confident and approachable.
Tell us about yourself
My love of luxury began in Paris, as all luxury does. A young girl in Paris was looking up to the architecture, the fashion, the elegance, the culture. Riveting. Mesmerizing. A fantasy all its own. Clothing design is where I began, but handbags simply make my heart beat a little faster. I am motivated daily, knowing the impact that my bags and pieces make on the woman who wears them. I design it with the intention to empower and enhance her confidence and presence. Handbags shouldn’t just hold your stuff; they should say “hello” and be your introduction.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To launch any company takes an incredible amount of dedication, vision, and bravery. To take a risk to develop and launch a luxury handbag line during a pandemic took it to a whole new level, adding some complicated layers to an already complicated system.
My biggest accomplishment is hard to pinpoint and is really strings of small successes along the way. I think success comes from finding the solutions and growing from your mistakes. And, selling out across the board in my first holiday season was pretty fun too.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Well, everything. Time is the most precious asset and something you can never get back; you must invest in the notion of working smarter, not harder. When you are solo, it can take time to learn new disciplines before you even get started, often leading to long days. It’s always rewarding to watch the artistry of the production and then see the final product worn and enjoyed. The time put in always pays off.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You must be passionate about your business and be honest. Know what you are good at and vice versa. Know when to fire yourself and bring in a specialist.
- Get a financial advisor you can trust, someone who can guide you through the first foundational layer of launching a business. It can be tricky to navigate all the ins and outs find someone you feel comfortable asking the things you don’t know.
- If you need help, ask for it. If you don’t ever ask, the answer will always be no.
