Transforming Education, Transforming Lives - Quantum Learning
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shari Murphy, President and CEO of Quantum Learning LLC., located in Westmont, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Quantum Learning LLC provides informative, motivational, and interactive professional development that transfers to highly effective classrooms and schools. Our customers are school districts, schools, and educators.
Tell us about yourself
I was a classroom teacher for over a decade but wanted to leave the profession after my first year of teaching due to not feeling effective. I attended Quantum Learning training, and it shifted my mindset and provided me with a better skill set to work with students. I stayed in the classroom for many more years and would share with teachers by facilitating Quantum Learning training on my time off from teaching.
I wanted to share what helped me to help my students. After working for the company for over 25 years, I chose to purchase the company when the original owners announced their retirement. I love inspiring people to be more intentional with who they are so they can be more impactful in what they do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am still very new to being a business owner, as it has not even been a year, so I think my biggest accomplishment so far is sticking to the goals we have set for this year and staying focused on them. There are a lot of people who want to work with you and partner with you as a business owner, and I look forward to that, but right now, we need to make sure we set a strong foundation, so we grow deep roots.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest thing is understanding the parts of the business that I have little interest in. As an example, my step-mom is an accounting consultant for me and has witnessed some minor tantrums with frustration in understanding all of the different types of taxes. The same goes for attorney language, which is another thing I have to breathe through. I want to understand every part of the business, and that has been one of the hardest things. As I am getting my feet wet, looking back, those minor tantrums make me laugh. I enjoy challenges and know they are here for my learning.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Believe it is possible and that you are the right person for the job.
- Use your resources. There are so many folks who are experts at the things we are not.
- Take care of your people.
