What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have an immigration and estate planning law firm. We help undocumented immigrants get the life they deserve here in the U.S. by helping them process their visa applications, etc. I also assist families, parents, and business owners take care of their assets through extensive estate planning.
Tell us about yourself
I am a mom, a lawyer, an author, and a speaker, but most of all, I'm a humanist and an activist who deeply believes that one person can make even the smallest difference. I believe we have the honor and privilege to use your talents to improve our world in some way. This drive to do more and to do better motivates me in my work as an immigration and human rights attorney.
On a microcosmic level, my motivation comes from my clients and the joy I feel when their entire futures are changed by obtaining legal documentation. On a personal level, I love that I can combine my passion for world cultures, languages, and humanitarian work into a career and that I love going to work every day as a result.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am proud that I started a tiny firm from my home when I was a young mom with kids, and I managed to grow it so that we now have two offices and a team of dedicated staff who are just as passionate as I am about changing our clients' lives. I wanted to create a safe, empowering, innovative space for like-minded people to grow and learn, and I feel like I've done that. And every year, there are new ideas and projects coming!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Turning your brain off. Owning a business is invigorating and exhausting at times. For every new idea, there are 100 more out there. I spend my commutes listening to audiobooks and podcasts about business ideas. But I've also learned to compartmentalize so I can be present for my family and actually enjoy the fruits of labor too! It's a delicate balance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do it. Listen to others, research, and ask questions, but also realize everyone is just faking it at some point.
- Don't be so worried about perfection that you are afraid to actually do anything.
- Done is better than perfect!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I would like to share this with everyone out there... to immigrants, that there is hope and that there is someone willing to help them.
