Solving Your Year One Retention Challenge - Q Works Group
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in human resources but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Clegg, Founder & CEO of Q Works Group, located in Fort Mill, SC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Q Works Group was founded as a Talent Acquisition company in 2002. We have evolved into a Talent Performance Group that helps our clients retain talent. We do this in a variety of ways. We help them find the right fit through our staffing divisions. We have an Advisory division that teaches Leadership development and how you create a safe, supportive work environment that improves retention, increases engagement, and fosters innovation and collaboration. This program teaches positive outcomes of psychological safety to benefit the organization and the employees' well-being. Our clients take away practical tips they can implement immediately within their teams. Our clients gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of psychological safety and how to create a workplace where employees feel empowered to take risks and reach their full potential.
Tell us about yourself
I'm the CEO of Q Works Group. My "not so silent" partner and I purchased the company 5 years ago. I've been a leader in the industry since the late 90s after college. It's a great industry where I get to serve people every day. I don't work on the staffing side of the business any longer. I'm more of an Organizational Consultant today and love every minute of it. I also coach high school football and have coached for the better part of the past 15 years. I thoroughly enjoy the Xs and Os and the strategy of the game.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Adding our Advisory division to our company will be our most significant accomplishment in hindsight.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As an Executive previously working, I had a team in every department that supported me. At the time, I didn't realize how valuable those teams were. Once I became a business owner, I immediately became all those teams.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have high self-awareness and be clear on the areas where you are weak.
- Identify a team of partners specializing in the key areas where your company's strategy points.
- Plan to work harder than you ever have before. Don't expect a 9-5. Some weeks it will be 7 days a week. Regardless of all of that, find time for family, friends, and restoration.
