Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nick Reyes, Chief Revenue Officer of PushPress, located in Overland Park, KS, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
PushPress is a gym management platform built by gym owners for gym owners, with a focus on delivering world-class solutions to lead generation, conversion, and delivering an amazing member experience. Our team has over 103 years of the collective gym ownership experience, with 100% of our Customer Experience and Sales Teams being either current or former owners.
Tell us about yourself
As a gym owner with experience in other platforms, nothing quite served our needs as a gym that was class-based with personal training. We found a new platform that was just launching, and not long after, I joined the founders of PushPress to help grow the business.
The most motivating thing about working with gym owners is seeing the direct impact we have on their business and, subsequently, their communities. Whether it's helping them grow their fitness business to sustainability or navigating COVID shutdowns to come out on the other side thriving, it's rocket fuel for the team and me to hustle every day to build a better product.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As one of the leaders of the PushPress team, I'm incredibly proud of our high customer satisfaction scores and our inclusion in Inc's Best Places to Work list. Delivering high value to our customers and taking care of our team are the best things we can do as an organization and our whole reason for existing.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Blocking out noise is incredibly difficult. We want to give small business owners access to the same technologies that their franchise counterparts have. That means there's always more to build and more to do. Prioritizing what to build and when to build it in a fast-moving market has proven to be quite difficult.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Listen to your customers and document their feedback - if you only stick to your vision and never deliver what the market is asking for, you may never be able to afford to build what you originally set out to.
- Invest in your team - they are the lifeblood of your business, and they deserve to be treated as such. Hire great people, give them autonomy to make big decisions, and back them through failure. You'll grow together and build a stronger foundation than trying to do it all yourself.
- Build a bottoms-up model from the very beginning and track your results against your assumptions - seriously, this is critical not only for measuring results but for forcing you to think through how you'll market, sell, and support your product.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Building a business isn't easy, but it can provide a lifestyle of flexibility that most only dream of. Go all in, and you'll never look back with regret on 'what if.'
