Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Webb, Founder of Purposeful Counseling, located in St. Louis, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Purposeful Counseling is a private practice that empowers adults and strives to help them heal broken relationships, manage anxiety, and encourage a healthy perinatal experience through therapeutic means and healthy Christian theology.
Tell us about yourself
I've been a therapist for almost ten years. I enjoy working with adults and helping them heal in various aspects. What motivates me is watching the positive progression my clients make throughout their therapeutic journey. I make mental notes of what coping skills and other therapeutic tools work to use with the next client. Overall, I'm humbled to be a part of a personal and intimate journey. I don't take my job lightly and appreciate the invitation my clients have given me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my most significant accomplishments is not giving up. So many times, I wanted to end my entrepreneurship journey and get a "regular job." I stuck with being a business owner because I knew my skills, talents, and abilities would be stifled in corporate America or the nonprofit sector. Being an entrepreneur allows me to explore my skills and help others creatively. The other accomplishment is being a published author. I wrote "Your Guide to Healing: A Therapy Journal" to help people keep track of their healing in therapy. The journal helps to develop healthy habits, discover the type of therapist you need to help foster your healing, and for you to witness your remarkable transformation by journaling daily, recording your therapy sessions, and tracking your mood.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Creating healthy boundaries is one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner. I am a mother first and then a business owner. Managing my time to support my family and care for myself is optimal for operating my business efficiently and effectively.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
It's okay to...
- Start over.
- Try multiple products until one works.
- Rebrand your business.
