Tattoo Tickets, Stickers, and Paintings - Purely Pixi
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jules Charette, Founder of Purely Pixi, located in Lexington, KY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a full-time multi-media artist, and my customers are all lovely humans across the world that find me through social media. I'm well known for my tattoo idea illustrations, but I create art with all types of different mediums, like painting, clay, and I recently started learning how to sew.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a 23-year-old that never grew out of her love for drawing - I created purelypixi in 2020 to escape from everything that happened that year in my personal life, using my art to cope and hoping to connect with somebody that resonated. Loving to draw motivates me to keep going - I just love to create and have since I was a young child. It helps me through so much.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is that I'm happy. Art is very healing for me and is how I've coped through hardships for as long as I can remember - I still can't look at some old artworks I've made just because of the feelings and memories that surround them, but I'm really proud of the fact that I have seen myself get better internally through my art. Even the art just in 2020, when I first started again, was inspired by very sad feelings and times. I wanted to rediscover my child-like spirit that just loved to draw and hadn't experienced pain yet. So learning how to experience happiness again is my biggest accomplishment, although it is a never-ending journey. Happiness and human connection are the core of what I feel to be successful.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I feel almost invalid for discussing hardships because I'm very grateful for the position I'm in and the ability to do what I do. I grew up in a low-income household with a single mom and 3 other siblings. The hardest thing I've had to do for years and to this day is just persevere and survive my brain and life - nothing's really guaranteed with this job, I just don't care and believe in what I do with my whole soul, even if its been at the expense of my health and sanity at some points which are not healthy and I don't recommend doing that. Learning how to want to take care of myself again is probably the hardest thing with my journey.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be your most authentic self and simply be open to learning what that means for you. Become your own friend; you need you.
- Loneliness isn't always a bad thing, but this journey can be very isolating, so be kind to yourself and learn how to feel comfortable in your own presence.
- Never stop going after what brings you joy and peace in life, but sometimes there is uncomfortableness to be felt to get there; leaving comfort zones makes room for growth.
