Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sharlene Styles, founder of PURE Natural Health & Wellness, located in St. Catharines, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I’m a Holistic Life Coach & Nutritionist specializing in women's metabolism, menopause, and mindset. It often includes weight loss - but it's so much more than that!
Tell us about yourself
I founded PURE Natural Health & Wellness 12 years ago when I opened my office in a yoga studio. I thought I was opening a retreat center headquarters for worldwide wellness retreats that included yoga, meditation, and nutrition. I didn't foresee the demands of the local community and yoga students nudging (well, pushing) me into private coaching.
Before coaching in health & wellness, I was a financial advisor. That lifestyle led me to what I do today. Pretty much all aspects of my life were out of balance then, and I had lost myself and my soul along the way. Yoga was my gateway back to myself.
A few years ago, menopause and middle age changed how my body felt, looked, and operated. It was very humbling. What I learned in nutrition school wasn't working for me anymore, so I dove deep down the rabbit hole of women's hormones and metabolism. I now have a customized metabolic nutrition plan that works to do what I was looking for then. Now I work with clients all over North America from my home office (still wearing yoga gear sometimes).
Knowing what I know now and from my own experience of understanding what works and what doesn't motivates me to help other women divert or escape the suffering I went through.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Honestly, my biggest accomplishment has nothing to do with metrics, numbers, or income. I get the greatest joy and reward from forming deep relationships with my clients. Seven years ago, when I closed my brick-and-mortar office, I didn't know it would be possible to develop relationships to this depth online, but it's happened! I love being able to connect with women beyond my local area and work from where ever I may be travelling.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'd say my endless ideas are one of the best gifts AND largest challenges. I want to implement all my creative ideas, but who has time for all of that?
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Understand how you can serve in a way that feels aligned, that you feel good about and that you actually enjoy.
- Understand who you serve and what problem you help them solve.
- Let them know who you are, what you do, where to find you, and how they can work with you.
Sounds simple, but we sometimes complicate things.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
If getting into business is merely based on making money - it will never be enough to stay the course.
