Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julia El, Founder of Pure Metaphysics, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Pure Metaphysics is for anyone ready to make real, lasting change by going deep within. My practice centers on a combination of talk and regression hypnosis. Clients book a self-care day when they're ready to experience a state powerful enough to double as energy work. So what's in our subconscious anyway? Both beauty and shadow--and experiencing one or both in your session without judgment, can bring clarity through understanding and inner peace through forgiveness. It's also a powerful way to release patterns of thinking and acting that limit rather than strengthen us. Clients come from all walks of life. They're in their 20s all the way through their 80s. They are musicians, c-suite executives, published authors, and students. They represent all major faiths and many spiritual disciplines. They are of different races, orientations, cultures, and countries. The one thread that runs through their experience is that they are all ready to take control of their destiny by stepping into purpose and alignment.
Tell us about yourself
I myself have had regression hypnosis and alternative healing sessions in different countries and with different practitioners, as I tried to heal from the burnout I invited into my life. In that process, I unlocked a different kind of power in me. I found answers, guidance, and my voice within. What I experienced personally stirred something in me. And although I had wished it to be true, I had no idea we could access a deep, subtle state with ease and using all our senses and that our own distinct inner guidance lay within that state. I began to explore different modalities, devour more and more books, attend lectures and join forums to understand what exactly it was we were tapping into and why it was so effective. I began to offer sessions pro-bono around my corporate schedule. People started to seek me out and trickle in for the work. We would find each other even as I traveled. Session outcomes began to shift my understanding of our truly interconnected nature. I also started to see firsthand how infinitely powerful we are when we elect not to give our power away. I've now restructured my world--sold property, moved state, opened a studio, and began writing a book--because what I found inspired me so deeply. When someone comes ready to make a profound change in their lives, and I have the capacity to hold space for something of that magnitude, it's hard to imagine doing anything other than a helping profession.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching Pure Metaphysics is the passion project of my life. There are cautious and pragmatic aspects to me, and taking the leap of faith to get started was my biggest hurdle. I had to strip away many layers of programming that said I simply could not and should not do it. Too risky. Too variable. Too uncertain. And yet, what I have found is simply profound. Each time I witness a client breakthrough, in whatever package it comes, I know I'm doing what I'm meant to at this stage in my life. I cannot imagine how I would feel today had I not nudged myself to do the self-work required to take the unknown path.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Balance. Bringing any idea to life requires a spark of passion. Without balance, that spark can ignite into a spectral fire that rages out of control. Or it can draw in the very conditions that put out the flame.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make a non-negotiable space for self-care. Burnout is real. And you're worth much more than your output. After all, you're not a metal bolt in a machine.
- Find a supportive professional community. Don't put friends and family on the work ride with you. Plus, you'll gain tremendous value by sharing and learning from new people who also work in your professional space.
- Surprises of all flavors, as well as unglamorous tasks, will take longer to address than you want. Be realistic with your planning and goal-setting.
