Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allison Szczukowski, Owner of Pulse and Beats, located in Easton, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and manage a Pilates and Yoga studio in Easton, Maryland. My clients are a broad spectrum of women and men ranging in age from teens to 90. We work with the totally deconditioned to advanced levels.

Tell us about yourself

As a former dancer and model, keeping fit is part of my lifestyle. I began by teaching for other studios but decided to open my own business. Seeing the daily progress of my clients, young and old, is what motivates me to continue this journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Successfully being able to continue operating through Covid and coming back with a boom when businesses opened up again.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Ensuring our instructors are properly trained to safely work with our clientele, who are sometimes elderly or with other physical issues.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient with yourself, your clients, and your business.
  2. Remember you are running a business. You have overhead and other expenses, so charge appropriately for services.
  3. Ensure your staff is qualified.
