Success, Health, & Happiness Begin Here - Psych Company

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krista Roesler, co-founder of Psych Company, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a team of life coaches, psychotherapists, psychologists, and social workers. We help individuals, partners and families live their best lives. Work through any mental health issues or challenging areas in their lives while assisting them in finding fulfillment and satisfaction. We are action-oriented and proactive and believe in not just talking during sessions but helping clients make long-term changes in their environments. We work with professionals of all cultures, male and female, and typically ages 16 years old to 68 years old. We treat a very broad range of issues and areas of focus for our individual and corporate clients.

Tell us about yourself

I first started providing therapy and coaching because I wanted to learn how to improve my own life. After that, I wanted to share what I had learned to help clients have better lives. Mark had always worked in corporate roles before signing on to Psych Company full time to help transition from a small private practice to a thriving and growing full-service team. Together, we harness our unique strengths towards a common goal and passion, helping people achieve what they didn't think was possible in their lives and overcoming hurdles in life and at work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Psych Company's biggest accomplishment was transitioning from being a solo private practice to a growing company with a broader and further reach to help more clients and address a wider variety of issues and opportunities.

Being able to let go of trying to do everything myself and let the team and my co-owner, Mark Brion use their strengths to support my weaknesses and add new value and dimensions into the mix. I really believe in that adage that you can go fast alone, but you can go far together. Psych Company is better with such a great team shining and using their greatest abilities.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

  1. Providing a sense of ongoing security for the team and ourselves.
  2. Identifying and recruiting good and committed talent of like-minded individuals who will mix and add to our strong team chemistry.
  3. Ensuring we provide top value to clients and staff is important to us, and we strive continually to make sure we are on track.
  4. Scaling growth and knowing which adjustments need to take front and center stage as we evolve.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have identified your purpose. This sounds obvious, but it's really not that easy. Know that you will be forced to pivot at times and that you must choose a purpose that would survive through multiple pivots without changing too much.
  2. A good admin and accountant are key to success and survival.
  3. Use data and technology to your advantage wherever you can
put in the research and analysis and know when to trust your gut - old and new ways to do things must always be balanced.
  4. Hire the right people even if it takes longer than you want. It's worth it not to let go of or tolerate team members who drag others down.
  5. Define your vision and strategy so that you can change as you go. Make sure it is communicated clearly with the team and that everyone feels they have a part to play in it (you don't want anyone sitting on the bench - small companies have no bench!)

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

You cannot take your business to new heights alone and sustainably take it to a place where you are happy, thriving, and fulfilled. You need a strong business partner, and if you don't have one, you need great advisors on your team. Empower people with decisions they can make, and they will feel a sense of ownership which is what you want.
