Tell us about yourself

For twenty-five years, My positive approach to business led to massive success. I've run five companies in five industries in both B2B and B2C and made the Franchise 500, Inc 500, and Best Places to Work. I've been recognized as a 40 under 40 and an Ultimate CEO. I run Proven Chaos - a company driven to help CEOs create compelling companies that outperform...and still make it home for dinner. My mission: positively impact 5MM people in 5 years through better business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've left the people I work with in better places than when we started.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The responsibility to love your people and "make business happen" so we can all be rewarded for our efforts.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't fall in love with your ideas. Fall in love with your customers and the REAL problem you are solving for them. It must be important enough and painful enough for them to take their wallets out and pay you.
  2. Be clear on your vision and your values. Don't hire people. Invite people on the mission you're on who identify with the impact and behaviors your company prizes. You want missionaries, not mercenaries.
  3. When it comes to your people, remember the 4 C's: Clarity on how they contribute and win inside the organization. Feel Challenged by the work they're doing. Comfortable, they have the tools and resources to execute and succeed. Feel Cared for by you as the leader. People won't leave you if you get the 4C's right.
