Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dan Purcell, owner of PROTx Services, located in Halifax, NS, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
PROTx Services is a multidisciplinary clinic focused on providing the core services of Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, and Chiropractic Care. PROTx is proud to be locally owned and operated by healthcare providers. We firmly believe in our core values of Client-Centered Care, Community Focus, Team Committed, and PROFunergy. Our core focus is "To have a positive impact," and we have a ten-year target to exceed $250,000 in community impact.
Our customers include all community members that require support to achieve their active living and wellness goals. We love working with clients who are committed to putting in the work to recover from injury, improve their wellness, and are looking for empowerment to live their best lives.
Tell us about yourself
I have successfully built and exited a previous business. While building this first business, my WHY was focused on achieving financial stability for my family and me. Although it is still a priority to have financial success, my WHY has shifted to that of a broader positive Impact.
As a business that depends on the community to succeed, it is our obligation to support that community whenever we can. PROTx is committed to providing accessible care for community members through extended schedules, efficient care delivery models, and providing funding to those community members that may not otherwise have access. PROTx is committed to providing best-in-class employment and is striving to be a Living Wage Employer. Finally, PROTx has committed to Community Impact in excess of $250,000. I am motivated every day to build a successful and profitable business that allows us to deliver on the commitments we have made to our communities and team.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My single biggest accomplishment as a business owner is reaching a place where I can "Let Go." I am very fortunate to have built a Team of individuals who all share my Values and Vision for PROTx. Allowing these leaders in the company to be accountable for their responsibilities has allowed me to grow PROTx quickly and with the confidence that everyone is making decisions based on our shared Values and the goal of achieving our Vision.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part of being a business owner is the personal responsibility for success. You need to be prepared to hold yourself and others accountable. Jim Collins refers to looking at the mirror for when you are responsible and looking out the window when others are. You have to do both. Having uncomfortable conversations around accountability is difficult but a critical component of success.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- In order to be successful, you must be passionate about the business you are in.
- There is no such thing as Work-Life balance when starting a successful business.
- Stay focused on your Core business until you have achieved success in that area.
