What's your business, and who are your customers?

Protéger creates versatile and conscious skincare designed for everybody. Our community of users loves Protéger for its comprehensive approach to full-body skincare, regardless of age, sex, or skin type. We are a proud woman and LGBT-owned business based in Philadelphia.

Tell us about yourself

Protéger helped me find beauty in some of life's greatest challenges. When my mom's ALS symptoms started impacting her voice and independence, my lens on the world changed, and I needed to refocus my vision. I quit my job in healthcare and started building a business around self-care rituals, as caring for my mom had been the greatest honor. My mom passed one month before launch, but she is still present in all that we do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In the 18 months leading up to the launch of Protéger, I would walk past my favorite local wellness shop. My daily walk has not changed but what I see when looking through the window has: Dermal Sérum, Protéger's face + body serum, is prominently displayed. Even though it's a small shop and hasn't generated the most revenue, its symbolic value carries the most weight for me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is also the best: the infinite possibilities of direction. Creating focus and carving out my path while also being nimble when necessary is a balance and one that I try to practice daily.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be shameless about asking questions (it takes humility)
  2. Be explicit about your expectations (no one will care as much as you do)
  3. Be curious about other founders (you're doing great already)
