Professional, Punctual and Competent - Prose & Consonants
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chantelle Louw, Founder of Prose & Consonants, located in London, UK.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a freelance B2B content writer (SaaS, tech, law), editor, and proofreader. My customers are typically digital agencies, SMBs, authors, publishers, and universities.
Tell us about yourself
After spending 11 years in corporate law, I got itchy feet and moved to academia, where I spent just short of 5 years teaching first-year law students how to write. I took the plunge into freelancing in 2018. Since then, I have created a robust portfolio of clients from different business, academic and professional backgrounds, both local and international. There are a few things that motivate me to do what I do. The freedom that comes with being a small business owner/freelancer is great, as I can work from anywhere. It's incredibly rewarding to see a project through from start to finish and know that I helped create something people will read and benefit from. But most importantly, in my line of work, I learn something new with each project, and that's my main motivator - to never stop learning and growing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
That I had the courage to take the leap of faith and start the business. But on a more serious note, growing the business and getting to the point where I don't actively search for work or clients but am retained based on my existing work and through word of mouth.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Learning when to say no and accepting and learning from rejection, especially when you're just starting out. It's not personal!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You don't need more content; you need quality content that you can repurpose across your business channels.
- Work with professionals to captivate your audience with their words and an editorial process that'll refine them to perfection.
- Always ask for a brief and get a contract in place for each job/client/project. This is super important.
